Nine months is the average amount of time every primary and secondary student spends in school each year. Pregnancies normally only last nine months, and a standard work day begins at 9 a.m. (except in the newspaper business where the standard work day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m., the next day).
The expression "to the nines" means to the highest degree, while "on cloud nine" means happy or euphoric. "The whole nine yards" has many meanings, but was thought to come from tailors who had to use nine yards of fabric to make quality suits. A short-lived sensation is often coined, "Nine Days Õ Wonder".
In many languages, nine and new are similar words. For instance, in Spanish nine and new are nueve and nuevo. In French the word neuf means both nine and new. When you reach nine, you know you are about to make a new start. The earth rotates 15 degrees per hour through 24 different time zones, one zone per hour. 24 Ð 15 = 9, 24 X 15 = 360, a full rotation. This full rotation of 360 degrees equals nine, 3 + 6 + 0 = 9. A perfect example of nine begin the start of a new day!
Nine is a power number in many religions and cultures as well. In Egyptian mythology, there are nine major gods and goddesses. Nine has strong associations with the Chinese dragon, a symbol of magic and power. The dragon has nine forms, nine children and is described in terms of nine attributes. In astrology, the ninth sign of the Zodiac is Sagittarius, identified by the Greeks as a centaur. Centaurs are magical creatures known for their archery, philosophy and prophet skills. And finally, important Buddhist rituals usually involve nine monks.
In sports, batting lineups in baseball consist of nine players, and the game itself consists of nine innings. Golf courses often have nine holes, and nine ball is the standard professional pocket billiards variant played in the U.S. And last, but not least, dogs are commonly referred to as K-9s and cats are thought to have nine lives. *
More importantly, 9 is the number of years that we have been married.
